—Berto to Max and Steel, Elements of Surprise Part One
Roberto Martinez, nicknamed Berto, is a recurring character in Max Steel. A skilled scientist, he works as the Chief Science Officer at N-Tek developing a variety of weapons and vehicles for Max Steel to use in the battlefield. Berto is also the creator of C.Y.T.R.O., an advanced robot controlled remotely to assist Max and N-Tek in their missions. Berto debuts in Come Together Part One and is voiced by Sam Vincent.
History[]
Early Life[]
Berto grew up along with four siblings. According to himself, he finished primary at five, school at nine and at twelve he graduated.[1] At some point, Berto built their aunt's farm house and he used to play with Rayne, his younger sister, when they were younger.[2]
At some point, Berto joined N-Tek and became the organization's Chief Science Officer, a position formerly occupied by Jim McGrath, Maxwell's father.
Season 1[]
Come Together Part One[]
Along with Kat and Jefferson, Berto was in a mission to recover an Ultralink pod. They were attacked by several THI airships, but they managed to escape along with the alien.
After Max is taken to the Turbo Chamber, Berto manipulates the device so it could siphon Max's T.U.R.B.O. energy properly. However, McGrath begins to overload and releases an energy shockwave, knocking back Berto and Ferrus. Ultimately, Max bonds to Steel and escapes from N-Tek.
Come Together Part Two[]
During Maxwell's first training session, Berto releases and controls a robot to fight McGrath, which was destroyed with relative ease with his Turbo Strength Mode. Berto then sends several robots at once for them to fight, with the teen having difficulty in dealing with them. After the creation of Turbo Flight Mode, Max successfully defeats all of them, causing Berto to have a fit and leave the room.
Come Together Part Three[]
After Max was kidnapped by Miles Dread, Berto scans THI's building and finds a duct that Steel could enter without being noticed by the security. During N-Tek's attack at the THI tower, he assists them with an updated version of his battle robot. However, the robot was eventually destroyed by Fire and Earth Elementors, leaving Berto disappointed.
Cleaning House[]
After Max fails in defeating a sewer monster that Berto had created as a part of the training system, he appears alongside Ferrus, saying that it was embarrassing being defeated by that simple creature. Steel and Max then reactivate the simulation, leaving him a Forge to fight the sewer monster.
Secret Identity Crisis[]
Berto uses his newest invention, the Holo Bot, to impersonate Forge Ferrus and prank Max and Steel. He then introduces the device to the duo, stating that it was recent invention that would be useful for "cloak-and-dagger" operations. The real Ferrus enters the room and Steel mocks him believing to be the fake one. Berto then deactivates the Holo Bot, stating it was an embarrassing situation.
Later on, Berto uses the Holo Bot to impersonate Maxwell McGrath, whose identity had been exposed by Miles Dread earlier. Upon seeing Max Steel and Max at the same time, Miles discovers that the student he had attacked wasn't the hero. Berto, at Max's request, uses the Holo Bot to impersonate Max and express his feelings to Sydney.
C.Y.T.R.O. Attacks![]
Berto unveils a new creation of his, C.Y.T.R.O., to Max and Steel. McGrath is unimpressed however, claiming he had already seen it before. Martinez reveals that he had upgraded it and had resolved some of its issues. He shoots a N-Tek Blaster to Max and reveals that C.Y.T.R.O. was equipped with N-Tek weapons, as he thought that a "walking armory" would be useful in the battlefield. Upon referring to C.Y.T.R.O. as his second sidekick, Max and Steel begin to argue with each other, causing the N-Tek Blaster on his hand to overload with T.U.R.B.O. energy. Berto tries to warn him, but he is too distracted. He uses C.Y.T.R.O. to grab the blaster, which then explodes and destroys the robot. Angered, Berto leaves.
Along with Steel, Berto begins to work on a new C.Y.T.R.O. model to withstand Max's T.U.R.B.O. touch problem. Max approaches them and asks if Berto would like to skateboard, but he refuses to. Martinez reveals that he and Steel had bonded while working on the project. He then happily shows a new version of C.Y.T.R.O. to Max, who jokes showing the head of its predecessor. Suddenly, the N-Tek alarm rings and Berto, Steel and Max head to the hallways to check it out. They discover that an unknown gooey creature was attempting to get inside the organization's Chemi-Vault.
Ready to use C.Y.T.R.O., Berto heads to his laboratory and tries to find his remote control, but he unable to. Suddenly, the robot begins to move by itself and attacks Berto. Upon hearing his scream, Max and Steel head to his laboratory to help him. Martinez reveals that C.Y.T.R.O. was gone and they check the security cameras. At Forge's request, Berto tries to shut down the robot, but he is unable to. Max decides to go after C.Y.T.R.O. and use his T.U.R.B.O. energy to blow it up and leaves before Berto could warn him that the robot was immune to it. After McGrath fails to destroy it, he links with Steel so they could stop C.Y.T.R.O., leaving Berto annoyed.
Using a portion of the trail left by the gooey intruder, Berto tracks down the creature. He finds it inside of a bathroom stall. At the same time, Max ends up at the same place after being thrown across the base by C.Y.T.R.O.. Berto snatches the control from the creature's hands and attempts to regain control, but he is unable to. He discovers that someone had hijacked C.Y.T.R.O. and was remotely controlling it. After the robot escapes from N-Tek's mountain base with the Tox-Bomb, Berto shows his latest project: the Turbo Cycle. He reveals that he had been working on technology capable of adapting to Max's T.U.R.B.O. energy. After Steel links to it, Max and Berto chase C.Y.T.R.O. throughout the city.
They eventually end up at Toxzon's lair. The villain activates the Tox-Bomb and talks about his evil plans. While he is distracted, Berto manages to regain his control over C.Y.T.R.O. and a battle initiates between the robot, Max, Toxzon and his Goopanoid minions. After Berto releases the Turbo Blaster to Max, the villain is defeated and Martinez manages to deactivate the Tox-Bomb. Afterwards, Max compliments Berto and Steel, stating they made a good team. They then head back to N-Tek's base.
Season 2[]
Ultralink Invasion Part One[]
Based on the Ultralinks' attacks, Berto created a training session with a large army of Ultralink monsters and a Makino ships for Max and Steel to deal with. They were easily defeated with their improved abilities. Berto approaches the duo, who were bragging about their abilities. He notes that they had defeated them in the holo simulator and in the easiest setting.
Max, Steel, Ferrus and Berto walk at the hallways of N-Tek. Forge's robotic arm begins to malfunction, though Berto assures him that he was still working on solving its problems. They head to the control room where Berto shows N-Tek's overhauled battle fleet, which now included the Striker Drones. He claims that N-Tek would be ready in case a villain showed up, but comments that Makino hasn't attacked in months.
When a trio of Ultralinks attack Copper Canyon city, Max tries to stop them but he is easily overpowered. Luckily, Berto sends C.Y.T.R.O. to the battlefield and reveals the Turbo Lash, a new invention that he had created based on the grappling laser of the Makino Destroyer on the training simulator. Eventually, with Berto's help, Max managed to defeated the Ultralinks. After Dread appears and reveals to be alive, Max mysteriously disappears (thanks to Ven-Ghan, who had teleported him from that place) and N-Tek's forces arrived to help them. Berto afterwards start his search for Max.
Ultralink Invasion Part Two[]
Thanks to a help signal sent by Steel, Berto was able to locate Max. He was about to be sucked into a wormhole, but he is luckily saved by C.Y.T.R.O.. Berto asks Max what happened, to which he replies that a hunter named Ven-Ghan had captured him.

After Berto upgraded the Turbo Cycle, he asks for Max's help to test it. When Steel warns Max about Sydney's alarming conditions, Max asks how fast the vehicle was, of which he replies that it was faster than flying. While trying to reach Sydney, Max was unexpectedly linked with the Ultralink X376, which ultimately leads to Turbo Cycle's destruction, leaving Berto disappointed.
Hours later, thanks to X376's efforts, Max and Steel switch bodies and they ask for Berto's help to return them to their respective bodies, as the prom would be in that night. After analyzing the situation, Berto confirms that the only reason why Steel wasn't rebooted as originally intended was due to their strong bond. After Max mentions about the prom, Berto recalls about his school years and reveals that he had graduated very quickly and as such he never had the chance to go to a prom. He proceeds to make the cure, although it would take a few hours to complete it.
At night, Berto finally finishes the cure and heads to the prom as C.Y.T.R.O., shortly after Max managed to defeat Mega-Elementor. He offers the cure to Max, who decides it would be better if Steel experienced his first prom dance ever. Berto later on appears dancing through C.Y.T.R.O. on the party.

Trivia[]
- Berto is older than Maxwell, being 19 during the beginning of the series and 21 after the Team Turbo timeskip. The series' official website confirms that he is N-Tek's youngest operative.
- As revealed by himself in Split Decisions, it is very rare for him to leave the N-Tek headquarters.
- As seen in Split Decisions, Berto knows top secret N-Tek information that only high ranking officers should know, such as the Turbo Cannon Mode. However, it is never explained how he got access to such information. It is possible that due to his skills with technology, he was able to access N-Tek's secret files and discover them.
- Much like his classic counterpart, Berto frequently mixes Spanish and English words in his quotes.
- Berto likes to listen music while he works.
- As confirmed by the series' first sizzle, Berto was initially conceptualized to be Maxwell's "human" best friend rather than a N-Tek operative. He would help Max by developing his gear and was described as a friend he could relate and talk to.
- Due to the fact that he advanced through school very quickly, he never was invited to "the big dance." He reflects on this in the episode Reprogrammed.
- He stated in A Germ of an Idea that N-Tek pays him a lot of money to work for them.
