After being brutally defeated by Morphos, Max and Steel awoke within Jim McGrath's Takonian spaceship, where he explains the origins of the creature to them and told Max and Steel that they needed to combine their powers in order to face him. After entering the Turbo Chamber within Jim's ship, Max and Steel became more powerful thanks to the chamber's energy and gained the ability to combine their Turbo Modes.
Later on, during their last fight against Morphos, Max and Steel were almost defeated by him until they combined both Cannon and Spike modes to form Turbo Cannon Spike Mode. After Morphos wasn't able to absorb this new mode, Max and Steel used the new Turbo Mode's combined powers to defeat the creature and save the day.
The first fusion created via Duo Strike, being the amalgamation of Turbo Cannon and Turbo Spike Modes. It was created during Max's second fight against Morphos. Its heavy size and durable armor offer superhuman strength and durability. Like their original counterparts, Max can charge himself with T.U.R.B.O. Energy and launch itself on his enemies, and he gains the ability of shooting spike projectiles from his armor. He gains a pair of spike whips for hands, which can extend themselves to act as flails.
The second fusion created via Duo Strike, being the amalgamation of Turbo Scuba and Turbo Heat Modes. Max has cannon for hands, with one being able to shoot fire and the other being able to shoot streams of high pressure water. When both are used at the same time, they generate massive amounts of steam to blind enemies.
The third and last fusion created via Duo Strike, being the amalgamation of Turbo Sonic and Turbo Flight Modes. Max gains the ability of supersonic flight and shooting sonic waves from various sound emitters located on his armor.
Initially, Morphos was unable to replicate the abilities of the fusion modes because he could only adapt to one power at one time. However, after he absorbed Dread's security device, he was able to wield two or more powers at once so he no longer needed to worry about copying Max's fusion modes.
Turbo Scuba Mode’s underwater powers become water powers when it is combined with Turbo Heat Mode, hence the name Turbo Hydro Heat Mode.
All of the combined Turbo Modes include shades of yellow within their color schemes.
Turbo Sonic Flight Mode is the fifth Turbo Mode with the ability of flight, with Turbo Flight Mode being the first, Turbo Super Mode being the second, Turbo Rocket Mode being the third, Turbo Nova Mode being the fourth and Turbo Prime Mode being the sixth.
There were additional fusions created exclusively to the toy line, being those:
A concept art for the fusion of Turbo Strength Mode and Turbo Sonic Mode was made, although it never made it to the animated series.
Storyboards for unproduced content reveal that there were plans of interactive videos of Max and Steel asking the public about which mode they should fuse next. [2]
During development, some of the modes went through changes:[3]
Turbo Sonic Flight would originally have green energy waves on its armor.
Turbo Nova Mode was originally meant to be the fusion of Turbo Rocket and Nova modes, with the latter being its own unique mode. It was referred as "Turbo Nova Rocket Mode" and although the concept was used on the animated series, it was used by the toy line with the Rocket Nova Max Steel, whose description alludes to this earlier concept.
The combination of Turbo Spike and Cannon modes was known as Turbo Mutate Mode.
